Zito’s bad inning, Giants lose: Same old story

Published by bayareastudcb88 at 2:13 pm under Bay Area Baseball Edit This

Barry Zito loses again and the Giants fall to the Dodgers 6-2. Zito’s one bad inning in the third and a lack of offense off a declining and injury-riddled Brad Penny.

Barry Zito should change his name to Barry Zero. He brings in zero fans to the stadium these days, his 6-14 record with a 5.44 E.R.A does zero good for the Giants itself and for fans trying to be positive with him and his big contract.  This says a lot  to management that you don’t need to invest so much in a starting pitcher. You can just develop them or find ones  in your farm system like Lincecum, Sanchez, Lowry, Correia, future ones like Bumgarner and Alderson.  Starting pitching is a hot commodity in the big leagues and the Giants have many of it.  So it was surprising to see the Giants give that much money to one pitcher who has never been a dominating pitcher and with his best years behind him; when their biggest needs were hitters and more offense besides Barry Bonds bat.

Anyways, talking about offense. Zito has the lowest run support on the team and we basically give him zero runs. It seems like everything is lackluster and everyone gives zero effort when Zito pitches. It is depressing for Giants fans to see that we have five more years with this pitcher and his huge salary which could hurt us financially in locking up guys like Lincecum and Cain to long-term deals.  I just think Zito’s zero winless, bad start did him in this season. He hasn’t pitched that bad in the 2nd half. Since July 5th, spanning 6 starts, Zito is 3-2 with a 4.50 E.R.A which is a positive for him as the season progresses. I think Zito needs to pitch with a little more consistency and the Giants management needs to do their part and get more offense and power for this team. I think more run support will give not just Zito, but all of our good pitchers more wins, which could lead to more success for the Giants in the future and in the inconsistent, weak NL West where anything can happen.
